The finalists were: Márk Fridvalszki, http://markfridvalszki.com/ Zsolt Molnár, http://www.zsoltmolnar.org/ Kristóf Szabó - KristofLab https://kristoflab.com/ Áron Kútvölgyi-Szabó http://aronkutvolgyiszabo.com/ The ACAX / Agency for Contemporary Art Exchange and the Leopold Bloom Art Foundation joined to announce an open call for the Award. The winner of the award gets an opportunity to take part in the 3-month (September - November 2020) residency program of Residency Unlimited in New York. The residency program is supported by the New York-based Trust for Mutual Understanding. Just like earlier, we received 22 applications this year, so it seems like the pandemic did not have a great impact on the inclination to apply. Two years ago was the first time that the two art organization announced the Award and thanks to this Hungary also joined the award network called Young Visual Art Awards. The portfolios and the project proposals were selected by a three-member international jury. The jury members never met before and unfortunately their meeting was only online this time. Amy Mackie curator, the director of Parse Nola in New Orleans, Hugh Mulholland curator, director of the visual arts department at MAC, Belfast and Krzysztof Gutfranski art historian, curator, editor in chief of Obieg Magazine in Warsaw made their final decision after they individually and then jointly selected a shortlist.
The jury quoted in their justification the President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, who described the pandemic as the “globalisation of vulnerability”. “We need now to seize what I call ‘the citizenship moment’ and that we would come out of this having rediscovered instincts of empathy and caring that we may have neglected in favour of more aggressive instincts of individualism of an extreme kind".
“The panel believe that Judit Kis' exploration of and desire to ‘embrace vulnerability’ is particularly apposite at this time.”
The art of Judit Kis currently focuses on healing, rituals and self-care. She researches practices in the fields of psychology, religion, anthropology and communities on social media and she is particularly interested in the impact that these rituals can have on the viewers while integrated in artworks. She mostly creates performative works and she finds important the so called 'confessional art' that intentionally and publicly expose the artist’s private life experiences. |
