Ildiko Peter: Northern England, the Industrial Revolution Route (2012)

Shot with a Linhof Technika camera onto 4x5" colour negative, I created this series in 2012, travelling through the former Industrious North in England. With the birth of the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800's, the region became Britain's and the world's economic super power, the centre of innovation, of industrial growth and development. It's heyday was between 1850–1950.

Driven by my passion for architecture, history and urban transformations, my aim was to follow the tracks of the Industrial Revolution, to document the economic and social changes through the evolution of its urban landscape. I visited 7 cities in 4 different regions within one month. I captured the Victorian architectural heritage of docks, factories and warehouses, as well as the post-war buildings of the 1950'–60's and the contemporary architecture of city regeneration programs.

Along with the series of 66 images, the 162-page book adds historical insight and precise explanations to the changes that I have visually documented.

Ildiko Peter was born in Budapest, and graduated in MA Photography at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in 2007. She lived in Turkey, France and in Germany, and currently lives and works within the borders of Europe.

Her work focuses on urban transformations, exploring the notions of past and present.
